Tonic Polish Unicorn Pee Collection
"Unicorn Pee" is a special shifty pigment that transitions through red/gold/green color shifts. It's not the official name but that's what the nail polish community has started to call it, not everyone likes the name, but everyone knows what kind of polish is being talked about. This pigment is discontinued and very hard to get at this time. Anyone who has it from years ago is using it sparingly and if someone finds more it's like a gold mine! Naturally, this means polishes are extra special, cost a bit more, and have a lot of demand. Let's look at what Tonic Polish has concocted with this pigment! All of these applied beautifully with no issues, but unlike most polishes from Tonic, these aren't thick and are on the sheer side due to their nature and how the pigment looks best, so read each one to note the number of coats I applied!
Happy Beginning - a squishy royal cobalt blue - no unicorn pee included in this one, but it’s the perfect happy beginning for your unicorn pee toppers! For my swatches I used 2 coats and top coat.
When it comes to unicorn pee polishes, especially ones meant as toppers (and there is one or two in this collection) - they can be extra stunning with the right undies. Plus, think of it as conserving the previous polish - you can use 1 coat on top of a suitable undie to really get more mileage out of a bottle. Of course, we have so many polishes that running out doesn't happen often, but with something as hard to get as this pigment, it's treasured more, and not loaned to muggle friends!
One thing worth mentioning here - this is intensely pigmented, and blue pigments often have a smell to them. I've checked in with the maker, and this blue has 4 times the pigment of a typical blue, so the smell is extra pronounced. It doesn't linger after dry time and topcoat, but still worth a thought as some are more sensitive to smells than others.
I think this really is a good beginning polish if you don't have anything like it and haven't experienced a unicorn pee polish before. You get the most bang on darker colors -blues/purples/blacks. And Happy Beginning is already part of the set and intended for this purpose!
Next up is the topper of the collection, which I layered right away!
Apotheke - unicorn pee topper. Designed to use over other colors. This is the pigment that gives the color shift effect that "unicorn pee" is known for. I would not recommend this be worn on its own! Layer this baby!
You can see the color shifts here in my little glass cab that I use for my bottles. Reddish at the top, yellow in the middle, and green at the other edge. Green was the hardest shift for me to capture in all the UP polishes, but it's always there!
For all of these swatches I used 2 coats of Apotheke over 2 coats of Happy Beginning. 1 coat can be used just fine but I really loved how it transformed the blue and wanted it more intense.
This polish was the hardest for me to capture a good bottle shot of, the shimmer is so elusive but it does magic on the nails. I will have a separate post up in a few days to show it over different colors, I really wanted to stick to this collection for the post.
Uniporn- a sheer red jelly base full of unicorn pee. Gorgeous and squishy in 3 coats - it's also a jelly type polish, so even with 3 coats you may have visible nail line. You can layer this over a red undie if you want more opacity, or...over Happy Beginning!
You can really see the gold shimmer coming out to play here!
I'd better explain my coats here, I didn't think it would be so obvious! So a few weeks ago I completely broke off my index nail and resorted to using gel to build it up. Therefore...it's completely clear and in the case of Uniporn it was obviously off even at 3 coats. If the free edge is really white then it will contribute to VNL, ditto if it's not colored at all. So...that's 5 coats on my index nail. I feel like it matches the bottle though!
I ended up liking this one a lot more than I initially thought I would! I'm not big on reds, but this one looks more pink on the nail and that gold shimmer comes through!
Try this over black..or navy.. I'll do another post to try to show more variation. I'm wearing it over navy right now and it's red shimmer overload!Next two are inspired by a couple of Tonic's best sellers, so you know already they're stunning even without the UP!
Serendipity -a warm toned purple with the ubiquitous red to green shifting unicorn pee shimmer. Looks great in 2 coats but VNL sticklers may prefer a third. This is based on Lula, and I am one of the sticklers so 3 coats for me!
Sorry about all the side and bottle shots with this one, but I couldn't help myself..they showed the shifts so well!
Can you believe all that is hiding in this bottle?? <33
This would be a perfect vampy wine color for fall!
Mmm...yeah, pretty sure this is a favorite right away. And I do love Lula a lot as well so it's not surprising!
Next one is Huckleberry Sparkle inspired..
Curio - a blue toned purple with the ubiquitous red to green shifting unicorn pee shimmer. A little more sheer, looks nice in 2 coats but most will prefer to add a third - I did use 3 for my swatches
These are definitely my favorite bottle shots of the set, look at how boldly the shimmer came out to play!
Unicorn pee....no other words...
You can still see some VNL, but that really varies with the length of your nails, how opaque the free edge is, and how tolerant you are about VNL! The glow is undeniable though, right?

This one is actually a group custom - but to make it easier to purchase all the polishes, there's no special coupon to lower the price or membership being verified to ensure only group member order. You're welcome to join the fan group just to be in the loop on what's up with Tonic! But you'll still be able to purchase this polish when it's launched
I used 2 coats for the swatches, and that was perfectly fine and the polish is a lovely cream type. That's also why the UP isn't as strongly visible or stands out compared to the darker jelly type ones
This is such a delicate and pretty color!!

And that wraps up this 6 piece collection!! Any favorites? Must haves? I definitely want to play with these more to find layering combos, but wanted to get at least the swatches up before the release!
